Stream 1 Parallel Plenary – Promoting Effective & Well-Managed Networks of Protected & Conserved Areas in Africa
July 20, 2022 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Panel 3: More effectiveness, more expansion of PA’s or the importance of OECMs?
Margaret Kinnaird, the moderator, will introduce the discussion as to whether we should be talking about expanding area while effectiveness of existing area is low & OECMs are not considered? There will be 4 panellists, Kerry Jo Purnell, Amy Lewis, Madhu Rao, & Fred Nelson will share cost-effective mechanisms of Protected Area expansion to assist in achieving the 30/30 targets. Successes & lessons learnt will be presented & including learning how targets are met elsewhere in Africa. This is based on the scientific need for protecting half of Earth’s land & seas, & the important milestone of 30% by 2030. This creates a need to understand & implement how low-capacity states in Africa & other parts of the world can meet these targets. If African countries are to support & achieve an ambitious, multi-dimensional target along these lines, they need to be equipped with all available tools & resources to achieve & measure it; & be able to explore the opportunities & priorities for community conserved areas & initiatives to scale up coverage, impact, & community benefits across Africa & its most important conservation landscapes?
After the panellists have made their brief presentations, the audience will be able to participate to discuss such questions as: Is it about 30X30 & more about supporting more what we have? How can we achieve 30% in a cost-effective manner that respects community conserved areas & is more than area but embraces quality? What lessons are being learnt & what actions are needed?
