Panel 1: Building blocks for effective community-led conservation in Africa

Panel 1 of APAC Stream 2 will be moderated by Fiesta Warinwa who will introduce the importance of community-led conservation in Africa & exploring the key building blocks. Dickson Kaelo (Kenya Wildlife Conservancies Associations) will deliver the keynote address for this panel in the bigger context of community-led conservation – governance & institutional needs, & Kanyinke Sena (Indigenous Peoples of Africa Coordinating Committee) will bring focus to rights-based approaches in his TedX talk.

Four panellists: Joseph Itongwa (ICCA, Central Africa); Njenga Kahiro (Maliasili); Maxi Pia Louis (NACSO); & Malidadi Langa (Community Leaders Network) will address issues relating to the enabling policy environment; organizational development & individual leadership; community benefits & role of IPLCs, Youth & Women; & the challenges & threats of devolving authority of State-owned PAs to external entities.

After the panellists have made their brief presentations, the audience will be able to participate in group discussions to discuss various questions
